After NYSC in Bayelsa, I came back to Lagos with one thing, frustration. Crypto had humbled me. Not small losses… the kind that makes you stare at your phone and laugh because crying is too stressful. I was broke, tired, and just wanted to start over. I convinced my mum to give me ₦350k for rent. In my head, that was more than enough. I mean, in Bayelsa, that amount got me a very spacious self-contain. Life was soft there. Lagos said “welcome back.” I started calling agents.
“Mini flat?”
“750k.” “Self-contain?”
“450k.” I thought they were joking. They were not. After days of searching, I finally heard something within my budget, Ajah, Thomas Estate. ₦365k. I didn’t even think twice. Fear of “another person might take it” entered my body. I paid, without inspection. Two weeks later, I packed my things by 5am. Said my goodbyes. This was my fresh start. New life. New beginning. I got to the house… Opened the door… And froze. The room was small. I stood there calculating angles like a confused architect. Then it hit me, my king-sized bed was not entering this place. Not even with prayer and fasting. That was when I broke down. My first tears in that room. I called the agent immediately.
“Oga, this place is too small.” He didn’t even let me land.
“Money is not refundable.” Just like that. Case closed. I sat on the floor for a while, staring at my reality. Then I accepted my fate. Lagos had initiated me. I sold my king-sized bed idea and bought a student bed. The kind that looks like it belongs in a boarding school. Even with that, space was still managing me. To move around, you have to plan your steps. One wrong move and you’ll hit wall, bed, or your own destiny. But I stayed. Because what else would I do? Till today, anytime I remember that room, I just laugh. Lagos will humble you, but it will also teach you sense by force. 😭
