From the mother of the continent, Ethiopia showing us what happens when an artist and a curator decide to build a museum the way their ancestors built everything.
Addis Ababa is one of the fastest growing cities in Africa; concrete going up everywhere, foreign investment, imported urbanism. Addis Ababa’s building code actually forbids using mud for construction. Special permits are required. Elias Sime and Meskerem Assegued got the permits and built anyway.
The ZOMA Museum is made from chika, a traditional Ethiopian wattle and daub technique. Bamboo frame, mud and straw mixed and fermented for a month, turned every three days until it reaches the right consistency. The result is walls with natural thermal mass, flexibility, and earthquake resistance. Houses built with this same technique elsewhere in Ethiopia have stood for hundreds of years and the people living in them often don’t know when they were built or by whom.
While the mud was still wet, Elias Sime carved every surface, spirals, thumbprints, the Ge’ez script, butterfly life cycles. The building is simultaneously structure, canvas, and cultural archive.
They built on a two-acre plot of polluted, abandoned land in Mekanisa and turned it into a green oasis; gallery, school, library, organic garden, biogas system, natural water filtration. The land itself became the material.
Twenty-five years to build it. Centuries of knowledge behind it.
