What happens when a police officer gets the law completely wrong?
In this video, a UK police sergeant is seen threatening to arrest a driver at a petrol station pump. The issue? The driver filled his car with £60 of diesel and attempted to pay using a genuine, Royal Mint-issued £100 silver commemorative coin. The supermarket staff refused to accept the coin and called the police, leading to the dramatic stand-off caught on camera.
Is it legal? Here is the actual law:
The answer is both yes and no, depending on who you look at:
Could the shop refuse the coin? Generally, yes. While the coin is technically "legal tender" under the Coinage Act 1971, contract law allows a private business to decide which payment methods they prefer. However, because the fuel was already inside the car, a debt had been created. Legally, a business cannot "pick and choose" payment methods after the fact unless they clearly state their exclusions on the pump before you fill up.
Was it a criminal offence? Absolutely NOT. The officer arrested the driver for "Making Off Without Payment" (Theft Act 1978). To commit this crime, a person must dishonestly run away to avoid paying the bill. The driver wasn't running, hiding, or acting dishonestly—he was standing right there actively trying to hand over cash worth more than the fuel!
The Result: Because the police treated a civil contract dispute as a criminal theft, the arrest was entirely unlawful. The driver later took legal action against the police force, winning a formal apology and a £5,000 settlement.

I never blamed anyone for questioning it. But after taking legal advice, I can finally share this. Ladies and gentlemen, if you’ve ever doubted the reality of these new “Hate Crime Laws,” here’s the proof. Watch this video in full. Not only am I being threatened and harassed by members of the Muslim & Bengali community, but I’m also being targeted by the government. After Prevent Counter Terrorism police visited me and I was arrested, I was then visited again by another officer. The officer was polite but the outcome is the same: I’m now unable to get a job in Swansea. I’ve been labelled a “threat” and a “racist.” Organisations have been warned that if they hire me, pro Palestine marchers will show up to protest and demand I be sacked, just like they did when Swansea Council fired me. And this is only part of it. I have many more recordings of threatening calls which I’ll share in due course. This is the price I pay every day for simply saying: @TRobinsonNewEra is not a racist & the White people are not racist. This is just a glimpse of what I face almost every week.

Today, I’ll be visiting the police station to answer my bail after almost 10 months of extensions since my arrest in January. I’ve now been told my case has been passed to the CPS. During this time, I’ve been under a gagging order, unable to speak about the case or the complainant. The accusation? That I’m “racist” towards the Muslim community and caused them “anxiety” simply for speaking the truth and sharing facts based on my lived experience. I understand the Pakistani, Bengali, and Muslim communities better than most, and because I’ve spoken openly, I’m now being targeted. My current lawyers have been useless, and I’ve been told I’ll likely be charged with a hate crime. For those who think Sharia influence doesn’t exist in the UK, think again. Look at the recent cases where religion has been used as a shield in a country where Islam is not the national religion. As an immigrant, this is heartbreaking. I grew up respecting the British police and justice system but what I see now is a two-tier system where truth is punished and fear rules. Many White British people live in fear of speaking out, silenced by a fake term “Islamophobia” created to stop criticism and label truth-tellers as racists. If I’m not arrested today, I’ll be looking for a new lawyer who actually believes in justice and free speech. I’ll also be in London on 13th and 14th October to support @TRobinsonNewEra at his court hearing. You don’t have to agree with him, but this isn’t just about Tommy it’s about free speech for everyone. If we lose that, we lose our country. So, I can finally share the full details from the recording of when I was visited by the Prevent Counter-Terrorism police. This clip shows just one of many accusations made against me by members of the Muslim community, accusations that led to my arrest. Listen carefully to how these two officers repeatedly tell me that I’m “not in any trouble,” yet in the same breath insist that I’m somehow being radicalised by the far right simply for attending a @TRobinsonNewEra rally. Over and over, they reassured me I wasn’t in trouble but also warned me that attending a peaceful protest could “cross a line.” Since when did attending a rally, expressing a view, or standing for what you believe in become a criminal act in Britain? Let me make something absolutely clear. no one asked me to fight this fight. I chose to stand up because I have White British friends, family, and deep loyalty to this great country.
