While true, I think if I were teaching a survey of Catholic Social Teaching again, I'd probably assign both Magnifica Humanitas and Evangelium Vitae as the two high-level surveys - hitting both economic-political teachings and family-biology teachings.
Thomas Mirus@CatholicPods

Pope Leo's survey of past CST includes only the economic-political documents and not those on marriage and the family, Church-state relations etc...I think those have every right to be called social teaching and even provide the basis for the documents more colloquially understood as CST

@CMReport In your hypo, what direction did their bishop give? It is not their place to countermand the bishop.

In 2020, obedience required the cessation of public mass. For those priests that did them anyway because they firmly believed that they should not abandon the faithful, did they do something wrong?

@marcportermagee I graduated from high school in 1963. We had read most of those by senior year. Senior year we focused on Greek, Shakespearean and modern tragedies. Second semester was 20th century British poetry. Light reading the second semester.

@EduardHabsburg What does being a boomer have to do with anything? Now you are just idly trying to insult people for no reason.

I am neither a boomer, nor does my opinion count, but I really liked Magnifica Humanitas. A timely warning call by a leading moral voice of the world. An appeal to get together before it is too late. Plus, learned a lot about Catholic Social Teaching

@EricRSammons That seems hopeful. I can't believe I have to be worried about a pope saying the wrong thing doctrinally.

Also worth noting for everyone, the fact Leo accepts the development of doctrine isn't news, he literally made JH Newman a Doctor of the Church. The news is Leo sides with Newman (& Ratzinger) on what development means, over people like John T. Noonan & German Progressives.
Magister Tertius@BaldwinIVofJer

“Began with Vatican II?” Because the Church had nothing to say about human dignity before 1962? “The dignity of man consists in his being made to the image of God.” - Aquinas, 700 years before V2.

@hf_222222 Your analysis that he sides with Ratzinger? Also that he rejects Aquinas and Newman on the primacy of conscience as opposed to Pope John Paul’s approach?

@BCJCarter Perhaps the point is that they are no longer Catholics. They are professed heresy and are planning. I would treat them as Pope Pius IX treated what became the old Catholics. That worked out very well for the church.

I'm getting older, the fire has died a bit. I'd hoped for talks between Rome and the FSPPX, hoped for an end to conflict, for peace. But for that, the "bridge builder" (Pontifex) has to be just that. Unfortunately he doesn't appear to want to build bridges with Catholics.

@WalkingHymnal You might like to notice that Bishop Barron was at the White House performing with that witch during holy week. Didn’t seem to bother him. Didn’t seem to bother you then.

Canon 395 §3: [The diocesan bishop] is not to be absent from his diocese on Christmas Day, during Holy Week, or on Easter Sunday, Pentecost and Corpus Christi, except for a grave and urgent reason. This constitutes "grave and urgent" how exactly?
Rich Raho@RichRaho

As Cardinal Cupich scores rockstar seating at this morning’s liftoff - 2 years past canonical retirement age - word on the ground is: “Blase isn’t going anywhere until Bob visits his hometown.”

@WalkingHymnal He has a cardinal whom the pope wished to be in Rome. Why are you making this petty point? I just don’t understand the motive.

I'm gonna get ahead of some of the "if the Church changed its mind on slavery, it can change its mind on same-sex relations, too!" think pieces that are currently being typed up after today's encyclical by dropping this here: newressourcement.wordonfire.org/article/104

@NickBurns So true. I once bought what was sold as parmigiana reggiano and when I got home and tried to greet it, it was grana. The clerk in the ersatz Italian deli did not know the difference. Turns out they did not sell the real stuff.

Wine is just wine to most Americans, and Grana Padano is as good as parmesan is as good as pecorino. But just see what happens when you say that Coke Zero is the same as Diet Coke. Like Robert Conquest said, everyone is an Italian about what they know best.

@jshocds You mean, the priest authorized by the bishop to do exorcisms, as opposed to just a parish priest who is not? That was true under the the 1917 code.

If this is a witch doctor putting a curse on the place & customers, they might need to get a priest down to Arnott’s to bless it. Exorcists are divided over whether curses take effect or not, but best to be prudent, & a blessing is never wasted.
Fatima Gunning@fatima_gunning

If this is what’s happening it’s hard to see how cursing buildings/people isn’t considered threatening and abusive behavior contrary to Section 6 of the Public Order Act.

Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich was in the front row of today’s public release of Pope Leo XIV’s AI encyclical. Many American conservatives had hoped the U.S.-born pontiff would sideline the powerful prelate. Instead, Leo XIV has promoted him.
