If you haven’t already, I would encourage you to make the jump to the blue skies platform and leave this turgid place behind - particularly if you are interested in history! I’ve made a starter pack of Seventeenth Centuryists and the #17thC feed. Mon over! #twitterstorians

@GeorgianLords Ah, thank you - I’m pleased that the marriage was happy, but it’s an important reminder that even so there could be a lot of sadness to endure

@RoryMuir3 Remarkably well for the period, though there was the sadness of the majority of their children not surviving childhood, and the heir suffering from severe mental health problems.

Happy to have this review of @RoryMuir3's excellent Love and Marriage in the Age of Jane Austen out in the world. Pause for a little romance today, my friends, and read about love in Jane Austen's time. currentpub.com/2024/11/11/rev…

@GraemeCallister 's threads are always fascinating for their in-depth research which give a unique view, at scale, of the fate of common soldiers beyond the (dark or golden) myths and legends. Check them out!

On 2 December 1805, the day of the Battle of Austerlitz, the French 33e Ligne of Davout’s famous III Corps numbered 2300 soldiers and sous officiers, to include all men on the regiment’s books. This thread explains what became of these men in the decade of war that followed. 1/

@Hindu_Stan easier to leave stuff out of the main text, because you’re not scrapping it completely. Also (like putting in references) it uncovers lots of points where you’ve got something slightly wrong and gives you a chance to correct it before the concrete has set.

@Hindu_Stan I write a parallel text with lots of quotes from both primary and secondary sources, talking about where they contradict one another and going into the weeds that can never make it into the main text. Mostly so that it is there for me to refer to later, but it makes it cont.

Yes! - THIS!!

@Hindu_Stan What annoys me the most is when you've had to cut stuff out to meet their word limits, and then they say 'you ought to have expanded on this'. Well *I did*

@RoryMuir3 And that was after a healthy percentage of conscripts had already absconded en route to their depots - up to half in the very worst of contingents!

Ever wondered how Napoleon’s army evolved in the Camp of Boulogne (1803-5), before it began its conquest of Europe? Here are some stats I compiled from one regiment – the 33e Ligne – that show how it changed between the declaration of war (May 1803) & Austerlitz (Dec 1805). 1/

@GraemeCallister Very useful confirmation of a common assumption, that troops were most likely to desert early (often very early) in their service.

Yet dividing it up this way hides the fact that many of the deserters from the pre-May 1803 regiment had only joined a few weeks before war broke out. In all, 325 of the 379 deserters absconded in the first year of service – and 94 didn’t see out their first ten days! 6/

@RoryMuir3 Am clinging to the hope that cutting out the full references is going tosave me but that will only work if I have used a source multiple times and I don't think I have in many instances.

Crap! Had to add another chapter - 'to provide context' was hoping it would be short as I'm already ove rthe limit by 30,000 words... it isn't. Better get chopping!

Not impossible, but... On 7 October 1761 Lord Willoughby was at Compton Verney in Warwickshire writing to George Lucy about dogs; the next day he was in London in time to marry Louisa North at the Audley Street Chapel. Cutting it fine? #twitterstorians #travel
