Something I told 14 yo: People are going to stop reading books. I wish this wasn't so, but I fear it is. The silver lining in this cloud is that if you're one of the few people who still read, you'll have a huge advantage over everyone else.

This article by @rosehorowitch in @TheAtlantic is worth reading and talking about. There is a lot of talk about AI and writing, but not nearly enough about AI and reading. When students are assigned a chapter of Proust, they ask ChatGPT to summarize it. So, they can say what Proust said: "You have a special cookie; you dip it in tea, and it brings you back to drinking it when you visited your grandmother as a child." But you haven’t had the experience of living Proust’s words, his particular way of putting you in that experience. This is a challenge to art, imagination, empathy, and the development of an integration of thought and feeling. theatlantic.com/magazine/2026/…

Extraordinary article on the end of reading. Some are calling this another moral panic but this piece uncovers some very uncomfortable truths for parents and educators about where we are. As shocking as it is, there is nothing sensationalist about it either. I was interviewed by @rosehorowitch in her researching this article and I was struck by her deep knowledge and even-handedness on the topic. This piece is deeply researched and I would imagine just the tip of the iceberg. And her findings go far beyond "its the phones." The shocking thing for me is that the reading collapse isn't just young people or the distracted. Retirees, women, graduates (the people who have always read) are reading less too. That's what makes this a cultural shift rather than a moral panic about phones. theatlantic.com/magazine/2026/…
