Born this day in 1945: Tony Conigliaro. He is the youngest player in AL history to hit 100 career home runs (22 years, 197 days) and was on his way to a stellar career when he was beaned in August 1967 by Angels pitcher Jack Hamilton. The pitch broke his left cheekbone and permanently damaged his left eye. Tony missed the entire 1968 season. He mounted a brave comeback in 1970, hitting 36 home runs but his eyesight never recovered. He retired at age 26. Tragically in 1982, he suffered a debilitating heart attack while being driven to the airport by his brother, Billy. Months later, he suffered a stroke and went into a coma. He passed away in February 1990 at age 45. #MLB #baseball #RedSox
