@MuseZack You may be right about $100MM comedies. But I don’t think the #1 issue is for normal comedies was star salaries. The decline in $10MM-$30MM comedies after 2016 was mostly an uneconomic, imposed, top down, preference. As was the concomitant increase in mystery and true crime.

The main thing that killed the 2000s wave of R-rated comedies was star salaries & ambitious scenarios inflating budgets to the point where it was hard to make a profit. But from the vantage point of 2026, damn do Tropic Thunder and Talladega Nights look fantastic as movies.

I’m a big fan of screnplayer.ai if you want to hear your script (or any script) read/performed. I think w/in a couple years, some sort of audio/video accompanying a script will be normal.

Domestic box office is up 12% YTD vs 2025 but down 25% vs 2019 (peak year). Movie releases are down 20% vs 2019. People see good movies in theaters when they are released, and releasing in theaters enhances a film’s streaming value. We need many more movies in theaters.

Highly recommend obscure Spanish detective thriller La Isla Minima (2014), called Marshlands in American release. So similar to True Detective S1 it must have been influenced by it although they came out only months apart. Instead of Louisiana it takes place in the southern Spanish bayous, and the backstory/tension between the two detectives is cool because it’s set in 1980, just as Spain is coming out of Franco, and one of the characters is a fascist and the other isn’t. Extremely well made. It’s like half True Detective half Chinatown with very interesting historical setting.
