A decorated U.S. Marine from California was killed during a combat operation in Iraq, officials confirmed. Gunnery Sgt. Diego D. Pongo, 34, of Simi Valley, died Sunday alongside Capt. Moises A. The team was deployed by helicopter to the Makhmur Mountains, where intelligence indicated a group of ISIS fighters was hiding inside a cave complex. As forces approached the target, they encountered heavy resistance. Officials described the firefight as intense and taking place at close range. During the exchange, Pongo and Navas were killed. Several others, including U.S. personnel, were injured. Coalition spokespersons called the battle one of the most intense engagements with ISIS in recent months. Pongo, a highly decorated Marine, was known for his leadership and dedication throughout his service. The loss marks a devastating moment for both families and the broader military community, as two servicemen who committed their lives to protecting others were killed in action.
