You mainly see outright manipulation at labs where so much money and prestige is riding on being right every time no matter what (like say the president of stanford)

i think this doesn't do a good job of arguing beyond a reasonable doubt that manipulation is leading cause vs publication bias like the core argument relies on plos one just saying that they don't care about novelty, but we just have to take their word for it? on priors, reviewers are lazy and do dumb shit, and an interesting result is easier to identify and easier to justify accepting. even if you disagree with this prior it's just not supported well enough. otoh they clearly provide a study which proves that publication bias is real. the arxiv paper they refer to also states that the "significance filter" arises from both, but it doesn't attempt to identify what is the cause, while mostly talking about consequences clearly, both exist, if i had to guess at a share of like no more than 20/80
