I can't help thinking that if the British Government brought the energy it has to prevent the "far right" from entering the country to preventing illegal immigrants from entering the country there might not be a "far right" in the first place.

@marcosagusstinn The EU can by definition not ´act like the US or China´, because the EU is not one country. Abolishing unanimity rule won´t change that fact

Europe cannot act like a power if one veto can paralyse 450 million people.
The EU already uses qualified majority voting for most legislation: 55% of member states — 15 out of 27 — representing 65% of the EU population.
But on the most strategic issues — foreign policy, taxation, enlargement and parts of security policy — unanimity still gives every government a veto.
That means 1 country can block 26.
The EU knows this is a problem. Parliament and the Commission have pushed for more qualified majority voting in foreign policy and sanctions.
Europe has the scale: 450M people, 27 states, one single market.
But every strategic decision must be able to pass by majority if Europe wants to act like the U.S. or China.
Scale means nothing without decision-making power.

You seem to be celebrating that billions have been spent, regardless of effectiveness. Over €100 billion has been used for pensions and national budget gaps, while the EU still cannot properly trace where large amounts of the money went, the Court of Auditors said. Meanwhile, European taxpayers will face decades of repayment costs and potentially new EU-wide taxes. Is this really a huge milestone?

@RubenCober This is in general a problem with modern bureaucracy. A bureaucrat „feels“ like they achieved something when they send €50B to some organisation, even if that money does nothing. And there is almost no accountability.

I’m really not against public spending, but it has to be *decently well* managed.
If our bureaucrats keep burning money without a plan then no one should be surprised if people like Milei are gaining traction.

It shouldn't be just about Spain's misuse. It should be about the ineffectiveness of the EU´s Covid recovery fund in general. The European Court of Auditors is unable to trace how billions of euros from the fund are being spent. As Ivana Maletić of the Court of Auditors said: “What is missing is a comprehensive overview of how RRF funds are being used. Citizens have the right to know how public funds are being used, who receives them, and how much is actually being spent.`` Add to this billions that went to things that had nothing to do with ´economic transformation´, like renovations of Italian households. Moreover, the next generation will ironically enough have to foot the bill of 'NextGenEU', with costs for repaying the debt at 25 billion euros anually, which will likely increase
