2/2 There's some really good points in the article but, as usual, undermined by @simonjenkins4 propensity to extrapolate from single data points and generally make stuff up.

More nonsense from @simonjenkins4 . Evidence please for: (1) stamp duty putting elderly people off downsizing; (2) the UK using space in the least efficient way in Europe and (3) housing "causing" the UK to be the most nature depleted in Europe. 1/2

Sunak says he's "shocked" to read of Baroness Mone pocketing millions - hasn't he paid attention to rest of his party? Hancock's Covid contracts for his own family? Ex Health Minister Lord Bethell in cahoots with lobbyist Tory MP Owen Paterson? So much for Govt "integrity" #PMQs

The idea of an ‘endangered identity’ was a major motif of the Nazi version of cultural criticism & political anthropology. ‘Remember who you are’ was a key formula of Nazi ideology which propagated a solution to that 'problem' of identity: ‘Race always tells us what we are.’

@graemelyons @Natures_Voice I did a paid summer job with Ambios in Devon. Was amazing for me as I couldn't afford to do the volunteering or a masters. Didn't need a driver's license either.

Is there any support widely known about for young conservationists/naturalists from poor backgrounds? I really struggled starting out, especially as a residential volunteer at @Natures_Voice. It's still such a middle class world, where nearly all come from relative affluence.

@_ficus I was once at a conference where an architect said although it would be great if we could have algae in window panes producing energy, it would be the end of the human race because no one looks attractive in green light so no one would have sex anymore. I wish he had been joking.

It was about this time yesterday I was being told by a journalist that large-scale streetscape greening isn't practical because 'where would the Winnebagos park'. Possibly my fave dumb parking argument ever.

@RumbleBee2 @LuckyHeronSay It would be so useful if civic bike hire schemes included some cargo bikes for putting kiddies in (and luggage) so you could go by train and then pop the toddler in an e-bike and go somewhere from the station.

@catherinerowett @LuckyHeronSay I use a push scooter that I can take on the train (had two bikes nicked from stations). But doesn't solve the baby/toddler travel issue? Really if we just didn't have cars we would all cope just fine, but if you've got one it's hard not to use it. And baby/toddler phase is short.

@RumbleBee2 @LuckyHeronSay I've kept bikes at many stations in the past. Most stations have secure bike parking with CCTV. If not, you just make sure it's a basic old fashioned nothing special bike and has no attractive accessories. They're the best anyway. I've had more nicked from Uni than the station.

@catherinerowett @LuckyHeronSay Renting worked when both could commute by train; 1 of us can't now, so needed car. Once you have 1, makes financial sense to use it (tho we try not 2). When we rented, we lived nr train station but car rental place was 45min walk away; another consideration in a car-free future.

@RumbleBee2 @LuckyHeronSay In my experience renting or car clubs save enormously over owning a car. I wonder how you work it out as costlier? I guess taxis are expensive if you're out in the country. Again, living near the things you most frequent is cheapest & easiest, even if houses look more pricey.

@catherinerowett @LuckyHeronSay Or better access to pooled personal transport. Have lived without a car and just hired them in the past but at high time and economic cost compared to owning a car. All became unviable with a child.

@catherinerowett @LuckyHeronSay 2/2 c.) Could work too if everyone did it. Again, as is, couldn't rely on it being there when you get off the train! Especially with a child's seat or trailer. Generally think wholesale change is needed and then more local orientated communities would (hopefully) form.
