It’s very difficult (as you’ll see) to get a good pic of @Fortnums window displays. They’re always imaginative but these creatures, made of recycled materials, are absolutely magnificent. I’m bagging the hyena for my living room.

Objects of Poverty edited by @JoeHarley1988 & Vicky Holmes is out in just over a month, including a chapter by me about cobbled-together whistles. The cover features my bonkers barometer & one of the button whistles I write about.

I am Maria Noori, former university lecturer in Afghanistan.
Since August 15, I’ve been banned from teaching, education, and freedom.
August 15 is a black day for Afghan women.
Stand with us.

I last had time to sew in November. I'm trying to get back into it. I'm bad at faces, so apologies @Arifa_Akbar for my version of the cover of your amazing book (which I loved so much).
Rules : I reuse materials I already have / I can't spend longer sewing than I did reading

Well the bad news is I was made redundant in a fire-&-rehire; my role was given to someone w/a fraction of my experience, no PhD or publications, & no idea how to teach my specialisms; & the job market is dead. But the GOOD news is the university gave me a £10 gift card. #winning

I’ll be doing my first-ever London walks for @CityLit next month and would be delighted if you’d care to stroll with me.
First up, a 2-hour exploration of Whitechapel/Spitalfields and life there in the late-19th-century – on Tuesday 8 July, 11am

One of my favourite finds and still something of a mystery. A small hammer or anvil attached to a repurposed file. It’s been suggested it may have been used in gold or silversmithing .

@Rummage_work Amazing. Have you got that second signature? I’m really curious now!
English

@DrKateAsh Yeah, I found her too — dressmaker, stays in the same house for decades
English

@Rummage_work I’ve had another look at that first signature. I now think it’s Talmadge. There’s a Clara Talmadge living in Battersea on the 1881 census (she’s 22).
