I think it’s a question of intent for me. Like - if I send a friend flowers because I know she likes flowers, I’m doing it just to make her happy. If I stop doing nice things because she won’t watch my dog when I’m out of town, that makes it seem like it was not an authentic or meaningful gesture and I only did it to get something out of it. Same concept applies.
