Tip 104: For Unmatched Applicants- Stepwise Actions First: Please do not lose hope. In my experience, everyone gets matched in the end. It is a matter of time, persistence, and the right strategy. After working with hundreds of applicants, I have seen that everyone eventually matched. Losing only happens when you stop trying. Second is acceptance. Do not shy away from failure. I really respect the candidates who openly say, “I went unmatched, I need help.” I have seen many kind people step forward selflessly to help such candidates. Seek help and guidance. There is no shame in telling someone you went unmatched. No one in this world has achieved 100% success. Everyone goes through failures, this is a normal process. Normalize this conversation. And if someone makes you feel bad about it, cut them off. You only need positive people around you. Third: Self-analysis is very important. Many people are self-aware, but many have the wrong perception of why they went unmatched. If you don’t identify the real reason and work on it, you may see the same result next year. Identifying the cause is the most important step. For example: If you had interviews and still went unmatched → the issue is likely interview skills, communication, interpersonal skills, and networking. Don’t blame old YOG, low scores, or visa status. You may not have convinced the program that you are ready to do the job. If you had no interviews → then focus on networking, communication, and improving your CV to become a stronger candidate next cycle. These are just a few examples. Fourth: Engage with mentors. Let someone experienced analyze your application and help you build a Match strategy. You cannot go into the next cycle without a strategy. I am always happy to help, guide, and support anyone who needs it. You are not alone in this journey. #Match2026 #Unmatched #IMG #ResidencyMatch #IMwithArslan #AIinMedicine #ERAS #NRMP

DISTRESS WARNING: About 38,000 med students just found out where they got matched to residency 40 minutes ago. I’ve already spoken to one who is grateful he matched his #1 spot in his chosen field (after switching residencies & specialties after intern year). He now feels excited, honored, guilt, & imposter syndrome. I’ve spoken to suicidal unmatched applicants who are devastated. In the last 15 years I’ve spoken to mothers & fathers who lost their beloved children to suicide after not matching where they wanted to go. I have a stack of obituaries of beautiful souls who gave up after a temporary set back that is FIXABLE. Please 🙏 please do not make any impulsive self-harm decisions today. You have many people who love you & your life is just starting. I’m here if you want to talk right now. I’ll even take you out to dinner tonight if you happen to be anywhere near Chanel Hill NC. Reach me at idealmedicalcare(dot)org ❤️❤️‍🩹❤️❤️‍🩹❤️❤️‍🩹❤️❤️‍🩹❤️❤️‍🩹❤️

This is what real inspiration looks like!! It’s never too late!! 51 years old. 22 years after graduation. A mother 3 children. After 2 failed attempts on Step 1. And she still made it!! Dr. Kary has been one of the most committed and present members of our community, active in Project IMG, a leader in Project IMG Women, attending multiple events in New York and Miami, always showing up with purpose. She dedicated countless hours to her growth, her studies, her rotations. Always the first to arrive and the last to leave. Always pushing forward, even when the path was uncertain. Her journey wasn’t easy. It required resilience, faith, and an incredible level of persistence — balancing her dreams with her responsibilities as a mother and everything life placed in front of her. And today, she matched. This is more than a personal achievement. This is a message to every IMG out there: It is NOT too late. Your time has NOT passed. Your story is STILL being written. Dr. Kary, we wish you a HUGE congratulations!! You truly deserve this. Your journey inspires all of us, and reminds us why this community exists. This is what keeps @ProjectImg going. This is why we never stop. We are so proud of you!!🤍🩵 #Match2026 #projectIMG

I completed my steps in 2023, but since then, I have been struggling to get out of the bottleneck. Over the past three years, it has been a pure struggle. I applied to the match but unfortunately went unmatched. Is it a sign to quit?
Mustafa Alhasan@DrMostapha

My first US visa took 8 month to be issued. The first time I sat foot in the US, I went to take USMLE Step 2 CS! 2 days prior that my flight through Qatar was delayed by 1 day. After the exam, I left to New Orleans and my luggage got lost. 12 years later, It was worth it.

𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗧-𝗦𝗢𝗔𝗣 𝗦𝗖𝗥𝗔𝗠𝗕𝗟𝗘: Once SOAP ends tonight qt 9 PM EST, Scramble will start. If you’re unmatched even after SOAP, this is your final real-time opportunity for this cycle. It’s chaotic, unstructured, and first come, first noticed. Here’s how to approach it: 1. Get the Final Unfilled List Immediately, The moment it’s released, go through every program. Don’t overthink prestige, think opportunity. 2. Prepare a “Send in Seconds” Packet: Have this ready on your desktop: ✅ Updated CV ✅ Personal Statement (generic + specialty-specific) ✅ USMLE transcript ✅ ECFMG certificate ✅ 2–3 LORs (PDF) ✅ One short email template 3. Email Programs DIRECTLY (Now Allowed) SOAP restrictions are over. Send concise, personalized emails to coordinators + program directors. Subject: Unmatched Applicant: Immediate Availability Keep it sharp. Attach everything. No fluff. 4. Call Smartly, Not Randomly If a program has openings, a polite call to the coordinator can help put your name on their radar. 5. Be 100% Available Keep your phone on loud. Check email constantly. Interviews can happen within hours. 6. Be Flexible Prelim, TY, FM, IM, less competitive locations, this is not the time to be rigid. 7. Leverage Your Network Mentors, seniors, anyone connected to programs, one call/message can open a door. 8. Move FAST Positions can close within minutes to hours. Speed + preparedness = advantage. I’ve seen people secure positions in the scramble within hours. All it takes is one yes. Stay alert. Stay ready. Don’t miss this window. #Match2026 #MedTwitter #SOAP #Scramble #ResidencyMatch #Matchday #USMLE #NRMP

I’m disappointed to announce that I did not match to neurological surgery. Delayed does not mean denied. I have faced adversity before. I refuse to let this define me. That said, I am seeking a US preliminary surgery position and will work tirelessly, if given the opportunity. ✊🏽
