The replies are telling examples of physicians trying to claim exceptional abilities/duties/challenges, when in fact any clinician who has responsibilities to patients experiences the same. It says more about physicians' exclusionary self-regard than their competencies.

@davidtuller1 A reductionist model doesn't work either yet this is the one that is used. Chalder at least should know better, as a psychologist. Perhaps one day a systems model can become part of physicians' training as it is for scientists'. It is the 21st century ...

This is a classic example of physicians punishing patients for having illnesses they couldn't understand. A long, dark history of abuse, linking sexism (eg 'hysteria'/FND), racism, and anti-LGBTQ+ (eg conversion 'therapy'). The profession needs reining in v badly @wesstreeting

But as you gave ‘conversion therapy’ as a specific eg (in parallel to hysteria as eg for sexism) I wondered if there was more specifically.

The BMA claims Phys Associates to be unsafe. But over 90% of GP diagnoses of mental illnesses and treatments I reviewed for Courts over 10 years were wrong. It's GPs who are unsafe. We need integrated, primary services not under GPs control. @wesstreeting

@PutAimovigOnNHS @wesstreeting There is no link between ME and conversion therapy. The latter is a euphemism for torture of people with variant sexualities or gender identities. Conversion disorder is quite distinct. Despite both phrases containing the same word they have very different meanings of that word.

@RupertWhitaker @wesstreeting Can you explain the link between ME and conversion therapy? I have not come across a connection in my reading. Only thing I can think of is there was ‘conversion disorder’ which ME patients were frequently misdiagnosed with, but despite name is unrelated to ‘conversion therapy’.
