From a scouting perspective, Chuck Smith was one of the most technically refined pass rushers to come through Tennessee in the early 1990s. What stood out most on film was his explosive get-off, advanced hand usage, leverage, flexibility, and relentless motor. He consistently found ways to pressure quarterbacks by attacking offensive tackles with a pass-rush plan rather than relying solely on athleticism At @Vol_Football, Smith helped lead the Volunteers to the 1990 SEC Championship and developed into one of the conference’s top defensive players. As a senior, he earned First-Team All-SEC honors, led the SEC in sacks, and was named Senior Bowl MVP. His ability to create negative plays and disrupt offenses consistently showed up on film Several traits stood out throughout his career: • Explosive first-step quickness • Ability to bend and flatten to the quarterback • Violent, active hands • Speed-to-power conversion • Strong leverage and pass-rush technique • Relentless motor and pursuit effort • High football IQ and pass-rush awareness • Ability to create strip-sacks and turnovers Those same traits translated to the NFL after being selected in the second round of the 1992 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons. Smith finished his career with 58.5 sacks and 20 forced fumbles while helping lead Atlanta to a Super Bowl XXXIII appearance. His combination of get-off, hand combat, bend, and pass-rush counters made him one of the most productive edge rushers in Falcons history Accolades: Tennessee 🏆 First-Team All-SEC (1991) 🏆 Led the SEC in sacks (1991) 🏆 @seniorbowl MVP 🏆 1990 SEC Champion NFL 🏆 Second-Team All-Pro (1997) 🏆 Super Bowl XXXIII Participant 🏆 58.5 Career Sacks 🏆 20 Career Forced Fumbles Chuck Smith’s success came from his ability to combine explosiveness with refined pass-rush technique. He was a true pass-rush technician whose skill set translated seamlessly from Tennessee to the NFL and later helped make him one of the most respected pass-rush instructors in the game
