We should teach marching in primary schools. Not for some fascist, pro-military indoctrination but so people learn to walk in a straight fucking line.

@joachimnicolas @anon_opin Fair point, Joachim, but why not gradually get fit too? Still, both options are way better than driving on many levels.

@Russell34639699 @anon_opin For a lot of people, the goal is to get around, not to get fit. e-bikes make that goal feasible for more people. And actually, studies have shown you still get pretty fit with an e-bike.

The bicycle is probably the most perfect machine ever devised. It's simple, efficient and almost anyone can ride and understand it. The last thing it needs is a heavy battery and a load of complex electronics shoved into it

@VoicesofWW2 The photo was doctored by the soviet government before release to conceal the row of wristwatches on Kovalev’s arm. The watches showed he had been looting.

2 May 1945 (This is one version) - The flag was held aloft on top of the Reichstag building in Berlin, by a Soviet soldier, Aleksey Kovalev from Kazakh aided by Abdulkhakim Ismailov from Dagestan. The Russian photographer Yevgeny Khaldei, is credited with taking the picture. Here are the main points concerning the flag: Khaldei said the flag was made by his uncle, who stitched the hammer, sickle and star on to a red table cloth taken from the TASS office in Moscow. Khaldei was then on a short stay in Moscow, but soon returned to the front. On 2 May 1945 Khaldei ordered the three soldiers in his company up to the roof of the Reichstag. Various positions were tried before the final famous picture was chosen. The day after, the picture arrived in Moscow. Colourised by Doug

A lorry carrying 1000s of tins of paint skidded & crashed onto its side. The driver tried to wade through the paint that had broken open. A motorist stopped to help him reach safety. He wanted to thank the motorist from the bottom of his heart, but was too overcome with emulsion.

@CuriosityonX So roughly the same amount of time until this happens as the first life on earth until now. A bunch of stuff is going to happen on this planet before these cosmic fireworks.

In 4 billion years, the night sky will look like this. Right now, the Andromeda galaxy is hurtling toward us at 250,000 miles per hour. When it arrives, our sky will be filled with the glow of two trillion stars merging into one. A galactic dance on a scale we can barely imagine. We were born 4 billion years too early for the greatest show in the universe. ✨🌌 [new simulations suggest a 50/50 chance of a direct collision within the next 10 billion years]

@HistoriaJack If he came back in 2025 he’d find his home demolished, the countryside gone, concreted over and an asylum seeker hotel where his house once stood with the smell of kebabs permeating the air.

Sir David Attenborough recites the iconic final lines of "The Origin of Species" amidst the halls of natural history. Darwin’s writing reached a crescendo in his conclusion, where he describes the "grandeur in this view of life." He draws a parallel between the fixed laws of gravity and the dynamic, ever-changing nature of biology, where "endless forms most beautiful" have evolved from a simple beginning. This passage is considered one of the most significant in the history of science. It transforms the cold mechanics of natural selection into a deeply moving and poetic narrative of our planet's history.

#otd in 1966 Lee Marvin won Best Actor for Cat Ballou, one in a very long line of bad voting decisions by the Academy. We all know it should have been Burton or, my preference, Steiger. But Lee was a fine actor What’s your favorite role? Mine is Major Reisman in The Dirty Dozen.
