How about this? Most accidents with passenger planes occur on take-off or landing, making the altitude too low for conventional parachutes.
But what if, when an emergency occurs:
- The entire top of the plane opens up into two halves
- Passengers are already wearing wing suits of the type used by base jumpers (you see where this is going)
- Passengers are forcibly ejected thousands of feet into the air using a powerful system of levers, or perhaps rockets
- Passengers then glide safely into a designated area of the airport
