@elonmusk I had a chemistry teacher who used to tell us fantastic stories of what he got up to in industry before he became a teacher. I did my first degree in chemistry and have spent >20 years as an analytical chemist because of him. I love my job.

Similar story: 7th grade math teacher had left my school unexpectedly and so the principal, who had been in WW2, took over math class. He told amazing and brutal stories of his time in the war, while also doubling the normal curriculum speed to do 2 years of math in 1. But if you didn’t do your extra math homework, you didn’t get to hear the stories. Everyone did their homework.
FischerKing@FischerKing64

I had a male teacher for grades 5 and 6 who was highly eccentric (and not gay - he was a family man without a whiff of scandal). He had old printing presses in the classroom and we learned about how books and newspapers were printed - by printing our own pages with movable type we set ourselves. He showed us violent war movies. He had WW2 and Vietnam veterans come in and give graphic talks. One guy talked about his baptism of fire in Japan - he said something like ‘I jumped into the foxhole and killed two Japs with my pistol - I’m glad I bought that pistol off a guy before the fight because I might not be here if I hadn’t.’ The teacher would tells us the casualty figures of WW1 and 2 and sometimes start crying. He also taught us chess, and he spotted kids who were good in math. He gave me math problems well in advance of 6th grade, and ensured I was pushed up a level in middle school. He was tolerant of wild boy behavior - including boys throwing things at each other across the classroom. Only a few years later I heard he had to stop showing the war movies, the veterans weren’t allowed to give talks. He retired shortly thereafter - he was getting old anyway. But this kind of man used to teach elementary school. I don’t know why he wanted to do it - but he was good at it. And I don’t think there are many like him in public schools now - and that isn’t good for boys.

@chotiari @Gaynotqueer1 It’s a shame you can’t write anything sensible or nuanced online without being attacked. I do think there’s something to what you are saying, the more I read about the connections between autism, connective tissue disorders and gender nonconformity the more the pieces add up.

There may be a literal physical connection: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and other connective tissue disorders do appear to be more prevalent in young autistic women. My own autistic daughter uses crutches. We also know that young autistic women are more likely to be drawn into the trans community because it seems to welcome them, whereas girl culture - which they don't fit into - is not friendly. Girls are nasty to each other. If you're autistic, it's one emotional injury after another, while you try and try to make friends, until you withdraw. Those canes may be affectations, and they may be a piece of the uniform of fitting in. But they might also be a sign that says, "I'm autistic. I have a connective tissue disorder, and lmy body hurts, but I can't get a diagnosis so I just have to live with it and this is a tool I use to try to survive."

@peterjukes @Wilbaforce12 Do you genuinely believe that anything was set on fire just because Lucy Connolly posted that tweet? That’s ludicrous

@Wilbaforce12 Hotels were burnt. That’s probably why she pled guilty as nearly a third of a million people saw that tweet. No throats were cut and the original comment was only seen - at the time - by a few dozen. In any crime the quantum of harm is important

All those trying to turn Lucy Connolly into a martyr for free speech ought to read the appeal court findings. The police record of her lies on arrest is very interesting

@Lucie_Frances1 @realMaalouf Maybe this is more of a cultural thing than an Islam thing, a friend I work with is Muslim he’s been to my house and loves my dog, plans to bring his kids round to meet the dog etc he’s originally from Nigeria and had pet dogs when he lived there so 🤷‍♀️

@realMaalouf I honestly think this dog thing is a load of baiting by right wing nutters. I know plenty Muslims with pet dogs.

Residents of Metro Vancouver, Canada, have spotted several signs around the community asking people to keep their dogs away, as dogs are considered ‘haram’ in Islam. What do you think?

@RuthLoy6 @Harvey77865 @Micha3lHinrichs @TaraBull808 Every autistic person is different. My autistic son is not bothered by sounds or crowds. He goes to an ABA school and they take field trips to grocery stores and different public settings. One statement that has stuck with me, If you have met one autistic child, you have met ONE.

@JacquieLyla @Harvey77865 @Micha3lHinrichs @TaraBull808 I promise it doesn’t help an autistic child to be put through an overwhelming sensory experience. I am diagnosed autistic and at 46yrs old being in a loud crowded restaurant hurts just as much as when I was a kid.

@Harvey77865 @Micha3lHinrichs @TaraBull808 Clearly the people defending the restaurant do not understand autism. If the restaurant has a no child policy is one thing. Part of helping an autistic child is to give the experiences out in public settings. If a child making noise bothers you that bad, then you stay home.
