Artemis II's Christina Koch defined a crew: shared purpose, silent sacrifice, grace, accountability — inescapably linked. She described 4 astronauts aboard Orion. I recognized my OR and Trauma teams. In surgery and trauma, crew performance isn't abstract — it's the difference between life and death. The scrub tech who anticipates the next instrument before you ask. The anesthesiologist who communicates with a glance. The circulating nurse who keeps the room ahead of the case. The resident who holds retraction for hours without a word. The team who cleans, before and after every "mission". In the trauma bay, there's no time for hierarchy debates. Only trust, preparation, and unified execution. The crew either rises together — or nobody does. We don't orbit the Moon. But we operate in a space where seconds matter and trust is everything. Koch looked at Earth from 230,000 miles away and saw one crew. I see one every time I step into the OR and the Trauma room. In this age of technology beyond belief- AI, XR, robotics and beyond... let us remember that it is the HUMAN, the most important member of that crew. #Artemis #WeAreACrew @AmCollSurgeons @EAST_TRAUMA @doximity @CedarsSinai @HCAhealthcare @TraumaMGH @future_surgery @surgery_int @ExponentialMed @EvanKirstel @JasonSilva

I am so inspired by these people. They embody what we are capable of when we: - give ourselves near-impossible goals - work for decades to change who we are - are willing to take enormous risks together - celebrate the magnificence of shared life. Well done @NASAArtemis team! @astro_reid @Astro_Christina @AstroVicGlover @Astro_Jeremy (photos Bill Ingalls & crew)

In a heated OR moment, one simple trick: talk to yourself in the third person. We give better advice to others than to ourselves. @mehdirhasan: “One of the most effective ways we can channel self-talk to our benefit is to make a small but key change: Get rid of the ‘I.’”

Women are living longer—but not better. Misdiagnosis & dismissal of pain result from gaps built into healthcare systems. This #WorldHealthDay, let's make sure gender bias doesn't decide who gets diagnosed, treated, or believed. ▶️ unwo.men/CkT950YEHej #ForAllWomenAndGirls

Non-tubal ectopics + resource limits = no simple algorithm. Cognitive flexibility, rapid decisions, creative problem-solving are needed. It’s not just: Do you know what to do? It’s: Can you adapt when reality doesn’t match the plan? 2/3

Last week: case-based ectopic preg teaching with the VitalSurg program, collab with UBC & MSF, for non-surgeon docs in South Sudan. Focus on: #nontechnicalskills → Imaging ≠ intraop findings → “Straightforward” → surprise → Plan changes fast 1/3

A few new faces around here so let me reintroduce myself! I’m Ellie, I’m a @Cambridge_Uni Mathematics Masters Graduate who loves sharing the beauty of mathematics and STEM. I started my career in the space industry as a Space Systems Optimisation Engineer and later an Astrodynamics Software Engineer. I then moved to Machine Learning and worked as an Engineer. And I’m starting a new chapter very soon which I can’t wait to share more details about 😉 Throughout that time I’ve been an avid mathematics and science communicator from the UK, sharing content online (i’m on all platforms). I also engage audiences through talks, public speaking, and other STEM outreach. I use this space to show that education is for all and that there lies SO much beauty in mathematics and STEM, and I hope to share that through my outreach ☺️ All socials: linktr.ee/elliesleightho…

@TheNotoriousHPB This is certainly the case for colorectal. The left hand is often more important than the right, and both hands are active for 99% of the operations. I will say that my own experience being left-handed in a right-handed world made me a better surgeon.

Every surgeon should work to be ambidextrous to a degree. My unrealistic goal of professional basketball paid dividends as I’ve been using my left hand for common tasks for 30+ years.
Ron Barbosa MD FACS@rbarbosa91

When placing lines, I often see residents twisting and contorting themselves into awkward positions in order to be able to poke with their R hand. Instead: Learn to use your LEFT hand when it's easier. Learning to poke L handed🤚is easier than you think. You'll be 😀 later .
