After 12 years, multiple foreign powers sharing bases in the northeast, and a mission that started with ISIS and never really ended, it's all gone. President Al-Sharaa confirmed it himself: no more U.S., British, French, or Russian military presence in the region. For Damascus, this is full sovereignty restored on paper. For Washington, it's a quiet exit from one of the messiest chapters of Middle East involvement since Iraq. The harder question now is what fills the void. ISIS still has sleeper cells active in the area. Turkey is watching Kurdish forces closely. And Iran-backed groups don't need an invitation to move into a vacuum. As a Pole, I would rather live under the Russian partition of the conservative Russian Empire than under the boot of demonic Soviet Russia.
Communism was far more murderous to both the body and the soul than the partitions ever were. Even the 19th-century tsarist katorga (forced labor) wasn't as bad as the Soviet gulags were.
Ask Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn how great the Gulag prison system was, btw.
