The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was established in response to the Soviet Union's occupation of half of Europe after World War II. The Soviets were the first aggressors toward Europe and America since Adolf Hitler. The Russian Federation, under Vladimir Putin, continues to act as an aggressor toward Europe, even after the Soviet Union's collapse.
Putin has threatened the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania) and several Eastern European countries, which were formerly occupied by the Soviets, against joining NATO. His aim is to reinforce Russian control over the Baltic states and Eastern Europe. Recall how Finland and Sweden joined NATO after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022? Indeed, Russia's actions alone drove these nations to align with the West out of fear.
There is a reason Putin did not invade Ukraine before 2014. Pro-Russian Ukrainian presidents, who acted as Kremlin puppets, kept Ukraine under Russia's influence, maintaining an outdated Soviet mindset. Putin became enraged when Ukraine shifted toward a pro-Western stance.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine's president, is not the problem. Putin is.
