"[Platonism is] both the general rehearsal of this family scene [of a parricidal drama of the good-sun-father], and the most powerful effort to master it, to prevent anyone's ever hearing of it, to conceal it by drawing the curtains over the dawning of the West." - J. Derrida

The first six minutes of Konchalovsky’s 1997 TV Odyssey, four screenshots: • Odysseus exulting in his homeland, holding his newborn son. • The fleet in the Aegean, in a perfect Mediterranean landscape. • Odysseus praying before a statue of Athena in his home. • The nuptial chamber with the olive-tree bed. The budget and production values of this made-for-TV adaptation are nowhere near Nolan’s, but from the very beginning you can feel the Mediterranean, its landscapes, fauna and flora, the closeness of gods and family, the interweaving of myth and real life, and the tension between the raw and the ideal. And COLORS!

In The Odyssey (1997), Vanessa Williams plays the mesmerizing sea nymph Calypso, with Frederick Stuart as Hermes. A reminder of one of television's most ambitious mythological miniseries. Made with a record-breaking budget of over $40 million.

No Hollywood slop for "modern audiences": Michael Cacoyannis' "Iphigenia" (1977), based on the play by Euripides. Link to the full movie in the reply.

I had fun with the 2026 #TheOdyssey but I will say, the BIG scene with the suitors absolutely DID NOT top the 97 version as far as dialogue went AND this reveal. Listen to the PROMO Odysseus cuts on these bastards. (Careful for spoilers if you dont know the story)
