The gift of Schaefer, revival of Sorokin and elevation of Barzal has changed the #Isles equation.
- JGP and Lee were always staying. No need to mess with the heart. If they’re gone next season, that’s OK.
- The price for Robert Thomas will be too high.
- But if you want to take a run at a Kyrou-type and the cost includes a pick and just one prospect in the B+ range? Sure. Give it a look.
This is not just a moment. You’re not looking at one big trade just for the sake of extending a fairly magical season. It’s about the next 3-5 years — with this teenage superstar, a top-5 goalie, and the great Barzal and Horvat.
It’s OK for the GM to think ambitiously. The core of players have earned it.
Never in a million years did I think in September we’d be looking at the NYI this way. Actually, I would not have written this five weeks ago.
But it’s part of the ride. Enjoy it.

The Soucy deal is the kind of thing I was talking about here for #Isles — upgrades at reasonable costs. It’s a start and I expect there will be another one or two of these from Darche.

It’s been a nice season so far, but #Isles play every game dressing 3-4 guys who simply aren’t good enough. Roy and Darche, I’m sure, know this. They should have seen enough by now. I haven’t been in favor of any major “buys” that would cost assets best used for The Build. I believe this team can be a Cup contender in a few years if Darche doesn’t blink and does it right. However, if the GM can upgrade this current lineup with a low-cost move or two, he should. I believe those moves will be available to him in the coming weeks. The core of this team deserves it. So do the fans. You know who else does? Patrick Bleeping Roy. We can disagree on many of the coach’s moves, but I love his spirit and love for this team and his work ethic. Reality is there’s a possibility Roy will not be coach when NYI truly contend. Until then, he at least deserves as close to a complete lineup as possible. Darche should stop the experimenting with players not ready for this moment and/or not flourishing under Roy and give his head coach a better chance to lock down a playoff spot and have some postseason fun.

Isles need to find their A game ,perhaps playing a division rival like the Flyers will get the intensity at the level it needs to be.

#Isles are much better off continuing to coach and inspire Dobson. Seems to me that’s a better investment than hungry rumors and hopes of trading a 25-year old right-shot dman who’s already shown what he can do.
You’re not going to get equal value for Noah Dobson right now. And again, getting too high off a few games of Perunovich and Boqvist may be regrettable. They’re solid depth defensemen.
*Of course, NYI Country getting on Bertuzzi and McCabe is not the reason, nor does it excuse, Mike for trading them for Trevor Linden. But for anyone around back then, those two young players were criticized a lot. (Man, imagine if we had Twitter in that era).
