Long Post:
Something I don’t understand about the way many people approach modern art is how when it comes to visual art like painting, sculpting, etc. people will all of a sudden try to quantify “effort” as a determining factor.
If the only “real art” was art that was “hard to make” in a literal sense, then would written works not be considered “real” in this belief system?
I mean, ANYONE who is literate could write ANYTHING. If you’ve caught yourself saying “I could’ve made that” to modern art, then I ask why you don’t say the same to every novel you’ve read? I mean, you CAN write… you could’ve made any of those things!
Don’t you see how ridiculous it sounds? Art is about creativity, not difficulty. Art is a vessel for ideas, not merely skills. You can’t write off modern art by saying “I could’ve made that” because at the end of the day, you didn’t. You either didn’t come up with such an idea (which means there WAS some true creativity involved) or, even worse, you had the idea and chose NOT to create that vision.
You may find it silly, but that’s really the most important thing. Art is action upon idea… creating what at first only existed in the mind.
So next time you hear someone say “I could’ve made that” or dare to even say “That’s not art!” I hope you remember this post, furthermore I hope you express to them where they seem to be misguided.
