20 Posts Not To Miss From IARC60 Conference
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (@IARCWHO) recently hosted its flagship IARC60 International Scientific Conference, ‘Cancer Research into Action,’ in Lyon, France, marking six decades of global leadership in cancer surveillance and epidemiology.
Organized under the leadership of IARC Director Dr. Elisabete Weiderpass and held in partnership with the Union for International Cancer Control (@uicc), the celebratory event convened leading epidemiologists, public health practitioners, and clinical investigators. The conference centered on translating advanced discovery into systemic public health action and establishing robust science-policy frameworks to reduce the global cancer burden.
A major focus of the sessions involved addressing regional disparities in data collection and improving clinical research capacity in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). By gathering diverse perspectives from across international networks, the conference emphasized that implementing sustainable cancer registries and localized prevention strategies is essential for translating global epidemiological findings into effective national healthcare policies.
Below is a curated selection of key highlights, institutional updates, and perspectives shared by global oncology leaders during the three-day event.

U.S. Space & Rocket Center @RocketCenterUSA in Huntsville, Alabama, home to @SpaceCampUSA. I am quite sure if I had not attended when I was 12, I would not be where I am today. And now this generation of campers will grow up in a world where outposts are operating on the Moon and someday Mars. Hard to imagine what could be more exciting or inspiring.

@aditya_gan3500 Strongly disagree. As a peds oncologist, I’m well aware bad outcomes can be unavoidable. But I do think fear of being perceived as paternalistic has at times made physicians reluctant to have the difficult recommendation-oriented conversations families deserve.
English

@RyanRLion You are actually being paternalistic here.
This goes against the patient's prerogative.
Bad outcomes are often unavoidable.
Neither the doctor nor the patient or their family is responsible.
English

I think about this a lot. Presenting a laundry list of “reasonable” options is such a disservice. In difficult decisions, I want the weight to feel “on me”… not on families carrying the burden of feeling responsible if there’s a bad outcome.
Papa Heme@Papa_Heme
Sad I have to remind some doctors that shared decision making does NOT mean present them with a bunch of options and have the patient choose.
