In Canada: Lightning is responsible for about 45% of all wildfires on average, but accounts for about 81% of the total area burned in a given year. This is because human-caused (accidental or intentional) wildfires tend to occur near population centres, where they are actioned more quickly. Lightning can happen anywhere - including in remote areas, where fires can rapidly grow out of control before suppression efforts begin. Source for statistics: canada.ca/en/environment…

As @jasonthistle notes, Canada needs a national plan to identify who is in harm's way and to protect or move them before it's too late. If we don't get ahead on climate change adaptation more small towns like Merritt, Lytton and Port aux Basques will be financially ruined.
