Just an insane thing to say with the success of Backrooms and Obsession over the last few weeks. The box office is on literal steroids right now and you decided to double down on a business model that modern moviegoers are showing you they don’t enjoy.
DiscussingFilm@DiscussingFilm

Netflix film chief Dan Lin has reaffirmed that they will not work with directors who want theatrical releases. “There is a group of filmmakers who still want theatrical. Those are filmmakers that we’ve accepted we just won’t work with.” (Source: nytimes.com/2026/06/04/bus…)

I just know there are some families out there trying to get Masters of the Universe tickets for their kids right now and just have no idea there is a war taking place on the AMC site

Color me surprised, but #MastersoftheUniverse was better than I expected! Now it’s extremely by the books, it has every fantasy IP trope you can think of and pretty much follows the heroes journey formula to a tee. But it doesn’t prevent it from having some great action set pieces, phenomenal needles drops, and some (at times heavy handed) nostalgia for all the 80’s kids out there. Somehow, when everyone was counting him out, Jared Leto comes from the rafters and gives the best performance of his career. Skeletor was by far my favorite part of this film, and visually is some of the better CGI work I’ve seen in a while. This film doesn’t reinvent the wheel by any means. It’s too long and drags hard in the 2nd act, it’s got some not so great green screen work,a few too many awkward close ups on characters, and humor that wasn’t quite working for me. But if there was a movie to go see as a whole family this is the one, plenty of fun for people of all ages. 65/100

This year is shaping up to be the strongest box office showing since Covid, movie theaters are once again the dominant force in the entertainment business and it’s so refreshing
EmpireCity Box Office@EmpireCityBO

With an astounding $11m+ in Thursday previews, the full weekend should head for that $80m-$85m for @a24 and #Backrooms. Spectacular debut that will certainly lead to sequels or anthology films to come. Taking a chance just created a strong new franchise.

Man oh man #Backrooms is an interesting one. The more this film sits with me and I talk about it with others the more I like it. The atmosphere created in this film is second to none, physically building each room on set created a realism that green screens could never replicate. To no ones surprise Reinsve and Ejiofor are fantastic, one scene in particular towards the climax of the film, really lets their acting chops shine through. It’s hard to talk about this movie without spoiling it, but I could sit here and theory craft for hours about what I just watched. It’s so ambitious and unconventional in its storytelling. I’m extremely impressed with Kane Parsons' camera work. His ability to transition from traditional third person shots to found footage perspectives is extremely unsettling. Paired with the eerie sound design, hearing sounds and light flickers from 5 rooms over, and it makes for an extremely impressive debut film from a 20 year old director. I feel that this is something that will benefit from a second watch, but there is still so much meat left on the bone I really hope we get more down the line. 80/100
