The kids are correct and ahead of their parents! Harvard and most of the Ivies aren’t great - I discourage kids today from going there, even as an alum of that system. Stanford, MIT, Caltech, and the UCs (plus other elite state schools, Gtech, UVA, UMich, etc) are where talent is coming from. Also Imperial, Cambridge, Waterloo, and like 7-10 top Chinese schools (for Chinese students) and a few EU technical schools (Polytechnic, ETH, TUM).

I interview high school seniors for my alma mater so have a pretty good insight into the preferences of top SoCal students.
Here is what I'm seeing as of now:
-Stanford is ahead of Harvard
-MIT is shockingly about co equal to Harvard
-Princeton & Yale are way behind Stanford/Harvard/MIT
-UCLA is now ahead of Berkeley/USC and on par with some of the lower Ivies
