Felicitations to South Africa - fellow democracy, G20/ BRICS/ IBSA partner on 30th anniversary of end of the fascist apartheid regime & founding of its new democracy.
Nelson Mandela, the South African Mahatma Gandhi & Lion of Africa described “the golden thread “ that bound Indian & South African peoples together for many decades during the long, arduous and bitter years of struggle against common enemies: racism, imperialism and colonialism.” He acknowledged “with pride & gratitude the sterling contribution India & its people made towards the attainment of freedom from apartheid.”
I recall that in 1994 what a sense of achievement it was for humanity as much as the shedding of shame & wiping off the blot on our civilization. As an Indian diplomat, in every multilateral fora, in every Conference Against Racism we railed against this gross violation of human rights & called out those Western countries who continued to back the apartheid regime!
From 2013 -2018, I had the privilege of working with South Africa’s first woman VP & @UN_WOMEN ED, @phumlambongcuka who came from the conference rooms, streets and trenches of ANC & I carried the legacy of India’s fight against colonialism. We joined forces in the global fight against the gender apartheid that women and girls are still subjected to around the world.
