In deze Stille Week is het richting Pasen extra belangrijk om stil te staan bij hen die hun geloof niet vrij kunnen belijden. Tijd voor concrete actie.

BREAKING: Thousands of Muslim jihadis are on their way to the Christian town of Al-Suqaylabiyah, Syria, following yesterday’s pogrom. They are hunting for Christian blood and want to commit a massacre. It’s crazy how little the world cares about Christians in the Middle East.

Syrian Christians have been reduced from over 2 million to barely 300,000. Now they are under attack again. As we will soon enter the Holy Week, the very communities that have kept the faith alive for 2,000 years are facing violence, fear, and extinction. Pray for Syria’s Christians, but don’t stop there. Speak about it. Share it. The silence of the world is part of the tragedy.

On the eve of Palm Sunday and Holy Week, in the ancient Christian town of Suqaylabiyah, Syria, groups of armed Islamists are attacking Christian shops, homes, and churches. The Al-Qaeda/ISIS-aligned Syrian government is encouraging these attacks and has been a catastrophic disaster for Syria’s Christians and other minorities, as predicted. Middle East Christians are currently under attack from the Holy Land to Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq. God help everyone.

The Arameans gave the world its first global language. They helped shape the Bible, the Quran, and Western civilization. Today, only a small fraction of them remain in their ancestral homeland. Important high-level meeting in Berlin with Minister of State Serap Güler at the Foreign Ministry. Syria and the Arameans were front and center in a dynamic exchange with a highly understanding government representative responsible for the Syria file; in our view, Europe could use more such caring and inspiring state officials. @johnymesso, President of the World Council of Arameans (Syriacs), and Daniyel Demir, Chairman of the Bundesverband der Aramäer in Deutschland, held a substantive discussion on Germany’s Syria policy. One of their key messages was the need for Germany’s support to help secure an inclusive and stable future for Syria - one in which Aramaic, Syria’s former national language, and the Arameans, the country’s oldest continuously living indigenous people, are equally cherished, recognized, and supported.

Here’s what I believe we need to do to protect Christian and other minority communities in the Middle East: Today, at the Majority of Minorities conference—A New Look at the Middle East—I spoke with think tanks, influencers, diplomats, and representatives of various minority groups about federalism as a potential political system for governing the mosaic of ethno-religious communities in Lebanon and Syria. What works for countries like the U.S., UAE, UK, Belgium, and Switzerland can also benefit our native Aramaic Christians and Maronites in this region.

Before Politics, Before Nations — Identity Already Existed (7th Century) “Named by us Arameans ... the ancient sons of Aram.” Long before modern labels and politics, our intellectual ancestors spoke clearly and with pride about who they were. These are our own words. In our own language. Long before Edessa was renamed Şanlıurfa in southeast Turkey — where no more Arameans live in what is today a majority-Kurdish place — the 7th-century scholar Jacob became bishop of this city, long described by modern scholars as “the capital of a purely Aramean Christianity.” This is our history. History still speaks, if we are willing to listen.
