In the year 53BC the Romans, under the leadership of Marcus Licinius Crassus, invaded the ancient empire of Parthia (modern day Iran). Crassus was the Donald Trump of his time -- a man of enormous wealth, vanity, hubris, and self-aggrandizement. He led his Roman legions into a crushing defeat against the Parthians at the Battle of Carrhae (modern day Turkey). It is said that the Parthians cut the head off his dead body after the battle and stuffed its mouth with gold to symbolise the role that greed for riches played in his demise. As the great Eduardo Galeano once averred: "History never says goodbye. History says, 'See you later.'"
