“I also teach and lead the Hispanic Program. I think Southern is one of the best seminaries in the world, and what I do here is try to bring across what Southern offers in Spanish. We try to be a bridge between what Southern does in English for the Spanish-speaking world, and you can't put a price on that. If we are convinced that what we do here is important and it's worth sharing, that's what we want to do.” Dr. Roberto Carrera is Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies, and Director of the Online Hispanic Program. He teaches various classes on Biblical Studies including Introduction to the Old Testament (Spanish), Basic Hebrew (Spanish), and more.

“I studied the Old Testament, the Septuagint, for my PhD, and I'm still engaged in that world. I think primarily the world of textual criticism is important because we want to know and be sure that this is the Word of God. When we open the Hebrew Bible, when we open the New Testament, and we see different readings, and we have to decide which reading is the right reading, that's what textual criticism does, and it brings a level of assurance to the person that studies the Word of God.”

For Dr. Roberto A. Carrera, the whole Bible is meant to be read, understood, and treasured. He teaches students to see the Old Testament as God's living Word, helping them make sense of its difficult passages and its essential place in the story of redemption. In the classroom, Dr. Carrera equips students to study Scripture with confidence, from learning the biblical languages to understanding the text with care. Through his leadership of Southern's Online Hispanic Program, he also helps make that same theological training available to Spanish-speaking students around the world. Today we celebrate Independence Day and mark the 250th anniversary of the United States. From all of us at Southern Seminary and Boyce College, we wish you and your family a safe and joyful Fourth of July.
