Save the Children in Sri Lanka

Together with the Public Health Inspectors PHI our Partner @Sarvodaya held personal hygiene awareness sessions in 8 locations in Kothmale and Nuwara Eliya. PHI conducted these sessions, helping parents to take care of children in shelters. @Aushumanitarian

All volunteers of the Sri Lanka Flood Response received a training on #safeguarding and #PSEAH in Colombo, Badulla and Nuwara Eliya. Thirty volunteers from @Sarvodaya learnt about child abuse, sexual abuse, exploitation and harassment of adults in the community and workplace.

With funding from Australian Humanitarian Partnership, our partner Sarvodaya was busy cleaning wells in Badulla district. They cleaned 8 wells Mahiyanganaya providing direct benefits to 12 girls and 12 boys and 66 adults. Our teams were guided by the Public Health Inspectors.

‘Psychological First Aid is a life skill’; said one of the volunteers at the end of the training which Centre for Children’s Happiness led on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support and Psychological First Aid (PFA) for 30 volunteers from Sarvodaya in Badulla and Nuwara Eliya.

We are training our Flood Relief implementing partners on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support, Psychosocial First Aid, Child Protection and Safeguarding including Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment to ensure safe delivery of relief services. @SaveAusNews

⛈️ With Sri Lanka facing harsher monsoons and intensifying climate challenges year after year, as we’ve seen this week, true resilience depends on the strength and readiness of its local partners and institutions. The recent Emergency Response Training (ERT) in Matara, supported by Save the Children’s Humanitarian Fund (HF), marked an important step in this journey. It helped ensure that local partners and government stakeholders are equipped to take the lead - driving preparedness, coordination, and action from the ground up. 🫱🏽‍🫲🏾 Specifically designed to provide practical, hands-on exposure, the training built essential response knowledge and enhanced the anticipatory action and readiness capacities of 21 frontline responders from seven local CSOs (including @LEADSSriLanka, @sarvodayalanka, Chrysalis, FISD, Sahana, and IDEA) alongside university volunteer networks. This is localization in motion - shifting power, strengthening capacity, and ensuring communities are prepared and protected from within. 🗣️ Children & youth recently pitched their campaigns - co-created using the Child, Adolescent & Youth (CAY) Toolkit, to govt, donors & CSOs! Over 3️⃣ months, they planned & refined ideas tackling issues that matter most: ❶ Reactivating children’s clubs in Jaffna - building safe, supportive spaces where children can learn, grow & thrive! ❷ Creating safer digital spaces so children can explore, learn & connect without fear 💻 But this is only the beginning - young changemakers are already collaborating with local govts, forming coalitions & mobilising peers for action! Their voices are shaping the future of #SriLanka 🇱🇰 This project is implemented by @cchsrilanka together with @SCISL in Jaffna and Mullaitivu, with support from @savethechildrenhk

We can't stop disasters, but we can reduce their impact. In Sri Lanka’s Matara District, we are supporting communities to take locally led Anticipatory Action, helping them act early to reduce the effects of floods and other climate-induced disasters. In partnership with the @IWMI_ , Sahana Social Development Alliance, and local and national government including the @dmc_lk and NDRSC, we are co-developing a framework that brings together scientific forecasting, local knowledge, and policy alignment, making early action smarter, faster, and rooted in community leadership.

School meals are doing what they do best - helping kids stay healthy, focused, and in school 🌟 In many of Colombo’s urban schools, children used to arrive hungry, or not at all. Today, that’s changing. With daily nutritious meals, children are coming to school regularly, learning actively, and feeling stronger. That’s the vision behind U FIND - a simple mobile app, co-designed with communities, to make it easier for people to update their information & apply for social welfare support in Sri Lanka. This app is designed to be accessible for everyone, including people with disabilities, women breadwinners with children, the elderly, and others who are often left out. Supported by the Australian Government @dfat, U FIND is now being tested in 6 districts and will be ready to help even more families access support, safely and with dignity.
