The consultation to the Executive's draft Disability Strategy closes today. NIAPN is deeply concerned that there is not enough focus on tackling the disproportionate levels of poverty experienced by Deaf and Disabled People. niapn.org/niapns-respons…

Unfortunately with limited means - it will be impossible to provide every oil consuming household with support. This support must go to those who need it most - households that have children and those with someone with a disability / chronic health issues.
View From Stormont@ViewFrmStormont

Speaking in Washington DC, the Secretary of State says it is up to the Executive how it spends the £17m for households using heating oil. The Finance Minister claimed the funding would only equate to £35 per household. Watch the full interview tonight at 10:45PM on UTV.

Rebecca from @AtlasWomenatlas spoke brilliantly about the struggle with increased oil prices and how people need support immediately.

Listen again to Rebecca @AtlasWomenatlas talking on Evening Extra about the need for help with oil price rises. She talks about the need to get the payment out quickly, to target it to those that need it most & to continue to help if prices remain high bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/li…

For the 110,000 children in poverty in NI - support needs to go well beyond oil bills. Our response to the UK Government home heating oil support package:

We welcome recognition that families in NI face disproportionate pressures. Westminster has a responsibility to respond, but the same principle must extend beyond energy bills. Both Westminster and Stormont need to act - 110k children living in poverty before this cannot wait!

“Cost of living going up. Chances going down.” Current realities reflected in these lived experience quotes from women in Lisburn. Interventions needed.
Women's Support Net@WSN_NI

Read this from the wall of @AtlasWomenatlas the impact of the Cost of Living Crisis is real & the impacts often fall to women who act as the shock absorbers of poverty in their homes. Take the time to read this & our research: womensregionalconsortiumni.org.uk/wp-content/upl… @SCUKNI @C_Fitz_

Important call from @AdviceNI on the need to expand Free School Meals here - action has been taken in other countries but not here. Our research with women shows the importance of help with school meals in addressing poverty & we want to see the Holiday Hunger scheme reinstated
Kevin Higgins "Why are we penalised for UC errors"@KevinHiggins27

. #InternationalSchoolMealsDay In NI we are calling for: - auto-enrolment of children on UC to Free School Meals @PMcReynoldsMLA - expanding to include all UC children - bringing back 'Holiday Hunger' payments @danielbakersf adviceni.net/policy/publica… @AdviceNI @Feeding_Britain

At a very wet Stormont today for the anniversary of the High Court ruling on the lack of an Anti-Poverty Strategy. A year later we still don’t have one and the draft was poor. It’s time to act on #poverty

Save the Children has worked in Ukraine since 2014. Children live in constant stress with air raid alerts and a fear of attacks. Many schools have been destroyed. Children are paying the heaviest price. 4 years on Governments on these islands must continue to call this out.

We’re at Stormont’s All Party Group on International Development today focused on Ukraine. We’re hearing from Ukrainians in NI. “This is a war against civilian life, families, childhood. Children are growing up in a state of alert. A generation is being shaped by war.” (Pt 1 🧵)

In #Sudan, #hunger is deepening. This community kitchen in Omdurman feeds hundreds of displaced families each day. Fatima*, a mother of four, told me it is a lifeline for her children. Communities are stepping up. The world needs to urgently step up vital international support.

Across the Middle East and wider region, the escalation of violence is having a devastating impact on children. As tensions rise, children’s lives hang in the balance. We urge all parties to abide by international humanitarian law and protect civilians. It must stop. #StopTheWarOnChildren

S U D A N Over the coming days, I’ll be travelling across Sudan to see Save the Children @SC_inSudan work to support children affected by almost three years of conflict. I will be meeting with partners and visiting mobile health clinics, emergency response rooms, and schools - services that are vital to help children facing the most desperate circumstances. They deserve a future.

We've signed this open letter to the Executive in solidarity with @DPACNIreland and those disabled people who feel let down by this strategy. We know people with disabilities are some of the most impacted by poverty and their response to this cannot be ignored.

The Draft Disability Strategy is woefully inadequate. Executive Ministers must work with Deaf and Disabled people to create a strategy that will truly improve our lives. Sign and share: cutt.ly/Wtme6wqP

Important article in yesterday's @irish_news from Peter Bryson @SCUKNI. "It is clearly a political decision to keep children in poverty" - emphasising how far behind NI is in terms of ensuring children thrive in their early years & on the lack of universal provision on FSM.
