@kejamieson_ That's ridiculous.
Why not just have the swallows take the oil all the way to the final destination?

@joenutt_author Are they all meant to go to University now when they leave at 18?

This is a nettle that has to be grasped. There are many thousands of kids who would be far happier and more successful in life, leaving school at 16 or even 15 to work...if only politicians cared about managing an economy effectively enough to provide jobs. They don't.

Kids forced to be in school to 18. I see so many where it’s just a holding exercise. Given the option, many of them would prefer to work. They’d learn more , be socialised, grow up.

Yesterday in a lesson, two students asked to go the toilet. I said they would need to go one at a time. Miraculously, neither needed the toilet any more. They were lovely students and laughed when I called them out on it, no complaints but it was just going to be a chance to have a gab. If you don’t think loads of students use toilet breaks to bunk off lessons you are mad!
I will rarely say ‘no’, esp if it’s obvious a student needs to go but I will say:
‘Can you wait until we have done this task?’ - they usually don’t ask again
‘Can you wait until the end of the lesson?’ - they usually don’t ask again
‘You’ll need to wait for X to come back’ - they usually don’t ask again
All these questions also allow for you as teacher to gauge next steps.

@tombennett71 Are you sure that you were a teacher once? Just where did you earn your stripes?

Obviously I wish this school well, and its staff and students.
But removing students to a safe place where you can then decide if they need a sanction or a psychiatrist, is very common. And for most students whose behaviour becomes chaotic, abusive or dangerous, treating their behaviour as stemming from mysterious traumas, unmet needs or similar, ignores the fact that messing about or being uncivil is often perfectly normal spectrum human behaviour, and requires boundaries and consequences.
When you hear hooves, first think horses, not zebras. It might be zebras- bear that in mind- but first think horses.
English

This article neatly demonstrates, ironically, why removal rooms are necessary. Because no matter how you slice it, sometimes students behaving chaotically need to be taken somewhere. That’s the removal room. You can call it an isolation room if you have a taste for Kafkaesque literalism. You can call it the Triage Zone. The Crisis Intervention Hub. But it’s still ‘the place they go when their behaviour exceeds the classroom’s capacity to absorb it’.
It is the Room of Requirement.
Schools need one, and if you look for it, it’s there.

Well, that’s wrap! A fantastic day of people working together, learning from one another, and making connections. I’m alway so proud and grateful of all our speakers, supporters, sponsors, hosts and attendees. The researchED community, who travelled from near and far (Germany… Japan…USA..) to make today what it was. 12 years after we started, it feels as fresh and necessary as ever. Thank you so much to all. #rED25

@tombennett71 @EdnaKrabapple1 Indeed! The numbers will quickly mount up. Even if only 6 students in, say, each of 3 classes, don’t know their times tables that’ll be a total of, er…… well, quite a lot

This seems unwise

🚨 Maryland has adopted new math standards that REMOVE the requirement that kids know their times tables from memory, contrary to the US government's last major math education report. This is fundamental knowledge for preparation for Algebra. 1/8 marylandpublicschools.org/stateboard/Doc…
