The new @WHO's World health statistics report shows that global life expectancy fell by 1.8 years —the largest drop in recent history — reversing a decade of health gains: bit.ly/437wz4w Behind every data point is a person—a child who didn’t reach their fifth birthday, a mother lost in childbirth, a life cut short by a preventable disease. These are avoidable tragedies. They point critical gaps in access, protection, and investment in health care — especially for women and girls. Every government has a responsibility to act, with urgency, commitment, and accountability to the people they serve.

Today, the Trinity Centre for Ageing and Intellectual Disability proudly hosted the Breaking Barriers: Enhancing Cancer Care for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities conference at the @TCD_SNM @tcddublin Funded by the @hrbireland, this was the first conference of its kind in Ireland and internationally—dedicated to the critical, and often overlooked, intersection of cancer and intellectual disability. We were honoured to welcome Minister Hildegarde Naughton @1Hildegarde, Minister of State at the Department of Children, Disability and Equality with responsibility for disability (@DeptCDE), and Professor Brian O'Connell, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Trinity, who opened the event with inspiring and thoughtful remarks. Both highlighted the need for research-informed policy and the urgency of addressing cancer care inequalities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The day featured a dynamic programme including keynote talks and concurrent sessions on: Ethics, advocacy, and public and patient involvement (PPI) Screening, health surveillance, and early detection Policy, practice, and reasonable adjustments in cancer care settings We were also delighted to welcome several organisations with showcase stands, including: 🟣 @IrishCancerSoc 🟣 @MarieKeating 🟣 Patient Advocacy Service Ireland 🟣 @CancerInstIRE A huge thank you to all speakers, attendees, and contributors who are helping to advance equity in cancer care for people with intellectual disabilities. @mcmahonm44
