School census data for SEND out today. First time Down’s syndrome is listed as a primary need. I previously wrote this for @SpcialNdsJungle specialneedsjungle.com/separate-down-… I didn’t anticipate quite how woeful the data relating to Down’s syndrome would be 🤦🏻‍♀️😆

Headline should read that schools are in fact getting better at identifying & recording when children have SEN - exactly what should happen under the law Now we need schools/LAs to have the resources and strong accountability so children's needs are met bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Down's Syndrome Association
The Down's Syndrome Association is aware that the Government is currently exploring the benefits and challenges relating to Resourced Provisions, units and bases that are attached to mainstream schools, as part of their ideas relating to the reform of the SEND system. We would be keen to understand the experiences of children and young people who have Down's syndrome who have been in these settings. We are keen to develop some short anonymised case studies to support our policy engagement in this area. If your child/young person has been educated in a Resourced Provision, unit or base attached to a mainstream school in the last five years, and you would like to send a short paragraph of text outlining their experiences - both good and bad - please email us at policy@downs-syndrome.org.uk.

Shut away & ignored: thousands of disabled adults are at the frontier of the human rights struggle @johnharris1969 "The fundamental issue is not just that we have not acted on this seemingly constant crisis. It's that most of us are not even aware of it" theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

This is beyond ridiculous. Local authorities are failing to comply with legal duties, abusing and overloading the tribunal process (wasting public money) while using this information to lobby for the removal of disabled children’s rights.
Special Needs Jungle@SpcialNdsJungle

New #SENDTribunal statistics out show a MASSIVE 54% rise in appeals. LAs now win just 1.3% of cases. We're preparing our in-depth analysis @CaptainK77 and infographic @TaniaLT for the morning. If you're desperate to wade through yourself, check here: gov.uk/government/sta…

In our support group of 67000 members who share 100 posts a day detailing their thoughts & actions we see no evidence of this supposed change in attitude to schooling, we see parents who are desperate to access the support & understanding their children need to be able to attend
Steve B@75ThunderRoad

Another day, another parent-blaming headline. This time it's the Chief Inspector. Yes, Friday absences are an issue. But this narrative distracts from the reality that we have a seismic health crisis affecting both pupils and the education workforce. independent.co.uk/news/education…

Our attention at IPSEA has been caught by two things recently: a succession of “innovations” by individual LAs, and an inadequate level of scrutiny in Parliament regarding the experiences of children & young people who depend on the SEND system. So, what’s been happening?🧵[1/10]

Parent carers' mental health is at breaking point. I hear from families DAILY who have disabled children out of school, refused EHCP assessments so can't even apply to a schools. Children not accessing healthcare they need. Disabled children have rights. @UKLabour please see us.

I remain concerned that aspects of Bexley’s Safety Valve agreement conflicts with OFSTED’s SEND inspection findings & hear these concerns from fellow SEN parents. I recently joined other MPs to meet @bphillipsonMP & @CMcKinnellMP to raise these issues & will continue to do so
