The cost of being in the Freedom Caucus

Alabama does NOT have a conservative legislature despite having a conservative electorate. The state legislature is a near unanimous Uniparty of big government politicians. Some recent lowlights: The 2025 state budget (HB 186) grew government by a whopping 11%. This includes a 19% increase in Medicaid. ALL Republicans and Democrats voted for it. The legislature passed a tax subsidy program (SB 177) to the entertainment industry. ALL Republicans and Democrats voted for it. The legislature passed a bill (HB 288) that would subsidize student loans for athletic trainers. ALL Republicans and Democrats voted for it. Third party scorecards can be subjective, no doubt, but check out the Club for Growth Foundation's 2025 scorecard. Average GOP Senator score was 32%. The average Democrat Senator score was also 32%. The House numbers are similar - 31% and 28%. Republicans and Democrats all vote the same! They are all fleecing the taxpayer. Both chambers are also infamous at ducking votes. If a lawmaker doesn't want to be held accountable on a particular bill, they just "take a walk". They don't vote. The Alabama House has 105 members in it. It's not uncommon to see dozens of members skip a vote. For instance, HB 134 passed the House this year by a vote of 6-0. 95 members "abstained". Read that again. 6-0 in a chamber with 105 members. In 2019, the legislature along with Governor Ivey wanted to raise the gas tax. According to the law, you need a supermajority of lawmakers to raise taxes during a regular session. So what did the legislature do? They gaveled out of regular session, immediately called a special session where you only need a simple majority, passed the gas tax, gaveled out of the special session, and then resumed the regular session! What's hilarious - if it weren't so sad - is that the gas tax passed with supermajority support! 83-20 in the House and 28-6 in the Senate. They clearly weren't taking any chances that the bill could fail. I pray that we can one day help conservative lawmakers launch an Alabama Freedom Caucus in the state. But the current crop of lawmakers in office are wholly unqualified.
