With the recent Swatch release bringing a new wave of attention to Audemars Piguet, it feels like a fitting time to revisit the design that started so much of the conversation.
Released in 1972, the Royal Oak brought together a steel case, integrated bracelet, octagonal bezel, and high-end finishing in a way that challenged what luxury watchmaking was supposed to look like. Today, it remains one of the rare watches that feels both historically important and instantly current.

Never mind about the Rolex… had no idea buying one was like buying a Ferrari, where you have to beg, jump though hoops and then buy products you don’t want to get the one you do want! 😂 thought it would be fun to own, but would much prefer to just order something on a website (like a Tesla!) and be done with it. Perfectly articulated. If you have followed the brand for the last 15–20 years and didn't just buy a 41mm steel Royal Oak five minutes ago, you know that they tend to step outside the box comparatively to brands like Patek and VC, but when you look past the surface level value of the brand name, the level of watchmaking and innovation taking place at AP is some of the best in the industry.

Audemars Piguet (AP) context for those who don't know. 1972. AP was dying. They hired a designer named Gérald Genta. He drew the Royal Oak in one night. The move: make a luxury watch out of stainless steel. At the time, luxury meant gold. Steel was the cheap material. They priced it above gold anyway. People said they were crazy. That watch became the most iconic watch in history. Today AP makes 53,000 watches a year. Rolex makes 1.2 million. AP pulls in $3 billion from those 53,000 units. That's about $49,000 per watch on average. You can't just walk in and buy one. AP runs a profile-based allocation. Purchase history. Loyalty. Relationship with your sales associate. Sometimes you have to buy other collections first just to prove you deserve a Royal Oak. That's the wall I talked about. Now they put their name on a $400 Swatch pocket watch. Riots in 6 countries. Same logic as 1972? Take the "cheap" option and stamp AP on it? Maybe. When Omega did this with Swatch in 2022, MoonSwatch at $260, they sold over a million units. Interest in the real Speedmaster went up 50%. Brand wasn't hurt. It was amplified. AP is betting the pocket watch isn't competition for the Royal Oak. It's a $400 ad for a $30,000 watch. The wall is still there. Now more people know it exists.

Well, this is better than everything I posted below. This is the perfect watch. Rose gold, moon phase complication and classic. Works for casual or formal (rare for me) Might be allowed to purchase a Rolex from an authorized dealer if I wore it to boutique (Probably not. Total heirloom quality but also a way better watch than I should ever own.
If I sell a bunch of watches it takes away a lot of the financial burden from it. It'd just be like I was consolidating a collection. It's better to have one perfect watch than sux or seven ones you never wear.
If i sell my royal oak offshore because people are going to think it's a swatch, that eats up a significant portion.
Its not even spending money.
I'm arguing with myself right now.

After my Richard Mille debacle I posted about, I decided I need my first big boy watch. The closest I come in that category is a Royal Oak offshore. I want a watch I can hand down. These all cost similarly. Which of these do you like the best? 1. Patek 5168G Aquanaut 2. AP royal oak chronograph in white gold. 3. Vacheron Constantin Overseas Tourbillon in stainless steel. 4. Rolex white gold Daytona with a meteorite dial. (Yes, I'm selling a few watches to partially fund this and be responsible)
