What’s scary about the cyclospora outbreak is that the cdc isn’t tracing, so the manufacturer/supplier is likely still unknowingly producing cyclospora infected products. No recalls in sight, no solution in sight. Just explosive diarrhea

@armyvet19kilo @savethestatesUS @gginajack no federal regulation for how recycled water is used in CA&US just patchy state/municipal regulations or none, in which its left to third party audits its fine for subsurface irrigation, not for sprinkling, which requires potable water, if only someone made sure that was followed

@savethestatesUS @gginajack its impossible to test for specifically this pathogen in the environment, the outbreak and uncontainment is from Cyclospora no longer being a reportable pathogen, along with others, for the fault of being less known colloquially than E. coli and Salmonella to thiel's catamites

@bjthoi @caroline_mpls only source for the infective stage of the parasite is contaminated water, which makes its way onto the food chain through irrigation, but any irrigation that is above ground that comes in contact with edible external portions of the plant has to use fully potable water

@caroline_mpls because we don't actually have proof of what the source/vector of transmission is, it's really hard to give specific advice. irrigation is a possible vector, but it could be occurring at any stage of processing or transportation

This is still kinda light on info. They just say “stay away from produce” but does it matter where it’s from? What if it’s from a farmers market. What if it’s from my own garden?? Apparently it has to do with the water used for irrigation, but at what scale??

@caroline_mpls peroxide nor chlorine will inactivate the oocysts (armored spores), it hasnt been successfully cultured in the lab enough, and the other factor is the long environmental incubation the oocysts need to do, which actually makes it not able to spread person to person

@caroline_mpls the scale is pretty much any produce that is watered above ground and the irrigation coming in contact with external edible portions that are left intact post-harvest it is hard enough to test in a human with symptoms, impossible to find or eradicate in environment
