NOAA is about to roll out the new GFS/GEFS AI weather models on December 17th ⬇️ - AIGFS is an AI version of the GFS model. Its built on Google DeepMind's GraphCast and was trained on a mix of NOAA's GFS data plus ERA5 and HRES data from the European center. It runs four times a day and puts out 6 hourly forecasts going out 16 days. - AIGEFS is the ensemble version of that. It runs 31 different members with the same 16 day range. - HGEFS takes those 31 AI members from AIGEFS and combines them with the 31 members from the traditional physics based GEFS. So you get a 62 member grand ensemble that blends AI and conventional modeling together. This one goes out 10 days. Available parameters include temperature, u and v wind components, geopotential height, specific humidity, vertical velocity, mean sea level pressure, and total precipitation. Data is output on a 0.25 degree lat lon grid at the surface and on pressure levels at 1000, 925, 850, 700, 600, 500, 400, 300, 250, 200, 150, 100, and 50mb. The evaluation period actually started on December 9th so the data is already available on NOMADS if you want to check it out before they go fully operational next week (nomads.ncep.noaa.gov). This is the first time NOAA is making AI models fully operational. Should be interesting to see how they perform against the traditional physics based models.
