As investigators continue excavations at the mass graves site – where more than 250 human skeletal remains have now been recovered – Massagé reflects on the continued denial of truth and justice for Tamil victims of wartime atrocities. Even with more remains being unearthed, the families of the Tamil victims still face the same obstacles that derailed truth and justice during exhumations in 1999. The third phase of excavation at the Chemmani mass grave has commenced today. The excavation work, which had been temporarily halted in September last year, has now resumed. Today’s excavation activities are being carried out under the supervision of Jaffna Court Magistrate S. Lenin Kumar. At the conclusion of the second phase of excavation last year, a total of 240 human skeletal remains were identified, of which 239 have been fully exhumed. #Chemmanimassgrave #Chemmani2026 #Jaffna
