@rwidome But the question is about cost-benefit. Healthcare facilities are not entirely safe either, but we don't close them down because doing so would be enormously harmful. The harm from closing schools is also enormous yet we're acting as though that's not the case.

People keep making the argument that 1) schools do not seem to be major drivers of community transmission, 2) closed schools hurt kids, & 3) thus schools are safe & should be open. #1 may be true (data still not clear), #2 is certainly true, but that does not make #3 true.

@SMarshallMason I’m hoping we can get more popular support for the next, better thing. It’s happening! This transition could be bumpy though. Those of us living in the 3rd Precinct are now *very* familiar with the big ‘F you’ that MPD gives when they feel like they aren’t supported.

@SMarshallMason I think funding municipal services is always a challenge, but sending the right people with the right tools into situations should be far cheaper than what Minneapolis does now. I mean the amount of our tax $ that goes to settlement payouts right now... mprnews.org/story/2020/02/…

@rwidome Okay here’s something that’s weighing on me. I think we should have more appropriate services (e.g. social workers) do much of the work the police do (poorly) now. But how do we keep those new services funded? They won’t be as good as MPD at extortion.

@rwidome It’s possibly because I’m so tired that I appreciate what it takes to build things. So I am generally much more in favor of building on and reforming existing institutions than tearing them down. But the MPD is a big fat exception. Defund. Disband.

This isn’t anywhere near the most important thing about police violence—the devastating loss of life is—but... Our police have been bankrupting our city for years. Consistently and absolutely gutting taxpayers of money. I thought we’d seen the worst of it but probably not.

@MichelleSPhelps Is this one of the studies that finds that, conditional on an encounter with police, that white people are more likely to be killed? There's a concept in epidemiology called collider stratification bias that I think might explain this.
