Happy to see that the COL used SERE techniques until he could be rescued yesterday. Proud of everyone involved. Today, I want to remember COL Nick Rowe. He taught SERE to us Delta plank owners. SERE stands for Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape. COL Rowe survived five years as a Vietnam POW. Sadly, Communists assassinated him on April 21, 1989. He was a great guy.

On this day in 1965, the UK Labour Government axed the BAC TSR-2 in favor of the General Dynamics F-111. It was the last real attempt by Britain to "single-handedly" design and build a top-tier combat aircraft. A technical marvel that looked like it belonged in the future, the TSR-2 unfortunately became one of aviation’s greatest "what ifs." Even decades later, it’s hard not to wonder how British airpower would have evolved if the "White Bird" had actually entered service. Napoleon’s Three-Barrel Pistol (1802), a gold-inlaid flintlock by London gunmaker Durs Egg, gifted by a British officer. Its tap-action system fires three shots, with a “Marengo” engraving honoring his 1800 victory. Built around 1802, it features a multi-barrel “tap-action” system, allowing several shots to be fired in sequence without reloading, an advanced concept for the time. The pistol is richly decorated with gold inlay and classical motifs, reflecting both craftsmanship and status. Inscriptions referencing Marengo (1800), one of Napoleon’s key victories, suggest it was created as a commemorative or diplomatic piece rather than a practical battlefield weapon. High-end firearms like this were often exchanged as gifts among officers and dignitaries. Durs Egg was known for experimental firearm designs, including early repeating mechanisms, making his workshop one of the more innovative in London at the turn of 19th Century. #archaeohistories
