Sitting still is killing you If your goal is to build something special Something of your own Something that will break you free from the matrix The absolute worst thing you can possibly do is sit still. Let me explain: 99% of people are waiting for the one big idea. The one breakthrough. Waiting around for the answer to their problems to slap them upside the head. It doesn’t work like that. The answer isn’t coming. What you’ve been waiting for isn’t going to happen for you. You need to start going for it. You need to start failing quick then learning. COVID. March 2020. I’m locked down in my shoe box apartment in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I wish you could have seen this place. No windows in the living room or kitchen. My bedroom is big enough for a desk and a tiny little IKEA laptop desk. Can finally stop pretending I like going out to bars and club. So I pick up a course on Python. (Code Academy is awesome by the way). Never coded in Python before. Was starting off fresh. A few weeks in I decide to pivot and build a project. I start coding a stock scanner in Python. Crypto starts recovering from the pandemic dip. It’s all people were talking about. So I pivot again. Instead of a stock scanner I start building a crypto scanner. While researching crypto I come across this goofy picture called a Cryptopunk that recently sold for $15,000. Unreal. Who the f*ck would buy a picture for thousands of dollars? I pivot again, now I’m building an NFT scanner. The more I look into NFTs, the more I fall in love with the technology. I’m absolutely obsessed. So I make another micro pivot, I start an NFT Twitter account. What’s the most obnoxious username I can come up with? NFT God will do. I absolutely love writing about NFTs. So I start a newsletter and start asking for emails. Both accounts start growing quick. I’m getting a lot of asks to help out with social media. So I make another micro pivot and start consulting. Then I pivot again and start a community. 19 months later I’ve quit my job and am doing what I love full time. Dreams and goals I’ve had my entire life are accomplished. I didn’t wake up one day and think “O man I gotta start an NFT Twitter account and newsletter and build a community!”. No, instead I just took an online Python course. I didn’t know what I was going to do with Python. I didn’t know what my path to success would be. I just wanted to do SOMETHING. Micro pivot after micro pivot after micro pivot and here I am. A position I always dreamed of. The right thing to do isn’t going to present itself. It isn’t going to make itself obvious. You need to keep doing the wrong thing until you find the right thing. The worst thing you can do is nothing at all.
