@_VitaminT__ Good read, would the (presumably) more direct style in Scotland counter act a lot of the pressing work he’d want to put in? If we set up similar,is there more chance an opposition CB just hoofs it over our press/high line & play off second balls as opposed to going to full back?

Jimmy Thelin (Elfsborg) analysis. Likelihood Aberdeen can land him: Small. Elfsborg missed out on the league last season due to goal difference, & have European football this season. Nevertheless, an analysis I wanted to do. Background: Thelin’s playing career was modest, he started coaching at Jönköpings Södra IF in 2014, earning them promotion to the Allsvenskan. He joined Elfsborg in 2018, steadily improving the team despite significant player turnover. Finishing 12th and 8th in his initial two seasons, runners-up to Malmö in the third season. In 2021, Elfsborg came close to their first league title since 2012, but finished four points behind eventual champions Malmö. Last season, 2nd place narrowly missing out on the title to Malmö again, this time due to goal difference! Style of play: Thelin uses a 4-2-3-1 with a high line. Some label his style as long ball football, but it’s important to differentiate between long passes and aimless hoofs up the pitch. In both 2022 and 2033, Elfsborg led the league in successful long passes, indicating proper execution and strategic timing rather than hit and hope. The term “successful” underscores the team’s control of the ‘long balls’. Switches of play, diagonal balls to meet wingers’ runs, and transitional through balls, rather than the hopeless hoofs we’ve seen at Pittodrie much this season. Thelin’s approach emphasises fast, direct play, shown by Elfsborg’s league-high average of 75 long passes per game, with a 52% success rate, resulting in eight goals from direct attacks (Graph 2 and 3) Thelin’s philosophy revolves around high, quick counter-pressing to regain possession in the final third. He instructs his team to begin pressure when the opposition’s center-backs are in possession, aiming to force errors and win the ball in advanced areas. Elfsborg take advantage of turnovers, transitioning from defense to attack. They prioritise winning possession in midfield (more on this soon), and get the ball wide quickly, he encourages his wingers to not track back in situations where they think the team can win the ball. Opposition fullbacks are often in advanced positions, allowing Elfsborg to exploit a numerical advantages in the attacking third. This proactive approach sees numbers in and around the box, collecting loose balls and keeping pressure with numerical superiority across the pitch. High press structure: As the opposition CB have possession, Elfsborg’s midfield trio forms a tight triangle, denying passing lanes to the opposition’s central midfielders. The striker prevents a pass to the other central defender, this forces the ball to fullback, and the wide attacker applies pressure on the opposition fullback. This receiving fullback has one passing option from here, the channel. Elfsborg fullback should be able to intercept the pass. The successful interception allows Elfsborg to regain possession and initiate a swift transition to attack, leveraging their advanced positions(image 4:Ref-TFA) Elfsborg ranked 2nd in the league for ball recoveries in the opposition half last season(312),behind Malmö(318), and have converted twelve more turnovers into shots than any other team. Their attacks begin at an average distance of 44.2 meters from their own goal. This intensity is quantified by pass per defensive action (PPDA metric), Elfsborg’s PPDA of 11.1 is the third lowest in the league. A lower PPDA indicates a more intense pressing style, underscoring Thelin’s implementation of his brand of football. (Ref:OptaAnalysis) In situations where the high press fails, Elfsborg move into a compact 4-4-2 mid-block. This mid-height block, prevents the opposition from exploiting space inbehind, while avoiding deep defensive positioning that would inhibit their ability to absorb pressure or counter. Elfsborg’s outnumber the opposition’s attackers in crucial areas. Elfsborg boasts the fewest goals conceded, and lowest xGA figure in the Allsvenskan. (Graphic in comments)

@_VitaminT__ Polvara helping them choke out the middle as he’s coming inside all the time. His poorest game in a while. We lack a direct threat. No one in the team has real pace to run at a man and do him. Hopefully Duk and Morris get some good minutes

Thought we got off to a great start first 10minutes and then St.J took the sting out of the game. Mackenzie showing how much success we can have in the channels, St.Johnstone really choking the middle out so Clarkson and Miovski can’t get into the game. Duk has to come on, I’d want to see Robson bring in Morris at some stage. Get at the full backs and stretch St.Johnstones midfield, can get the better of them and at worse it’s opening up more space inside to play between the lines. One too many balls dropped in the 6 yard box without a Dons player attacking it, need to gamble a bit more also. Games there to be won if we go for it.
