If you were about to usher in a highly unpopular technocratic regime and wanted to crack down on free human expression, or the power of art to inspire masses of people to higher consciousness, what would you do differently from what has been done to media in the past ~30 years?

The fact that humans are wired by evolution to crave belonging to a group - because in the past, being alone basically meant you'd die - is (one of) the most exploited dynamics out there. Narrative, opinion and identity engineering is far easier than most people realize.

“Perhaps you have forgotten. That’s one of the great problems of our modern world, you know. Forgetting. The victim never forgets. Ask an Irishman what the English did to him in 1920 and he’ll tell you the day of the month and the time and the name of every man they killed. Ask an Iranian what the English did to him in 1953 and he’ll tell you. His child will tell you. His grandchild will tell you. And when he has one, his great-grandchild will tell you too. But ask an Englishman—” He flung up his hands in mock ignorance. “If he ever knew, he has forgotten. ‘Move on!’ you tell us. ‘Move on! Forget what we’ve done to you. Tomorrow’s another day!’ But it isn’t, Mr. Brue.” He still had Brue’s hand. “Tomorrow was created yesterday, you see. That is the point I was making to you. And by the day before yesterday, too. To ignore history is to ignore the wolf at the door.” - - A Most Wanted Man, John le Carré

For me, that hope peaked in 1999. We really thought that the globalists were shaking in their boots and that things would change for the better from 2000 onwards. Then 9/11 and the "War on Terror" happened...

@WinterOakPress I really miss those days so much. We never realized how good things were until we lost them

Rory Sutherland made a quietly devastating observation about one of the biggest societal shifts of the last 50 years. He said the move to the double-income household started as an option but quickly became an obligation. The big winners? Governments (twice as many people to tax) and property owners (now two salaries were needed to buy a house). The big loser? The family itself, which lost roughly 35 hours of discretionary leisure time per week — with no real increase in living standards, because the extra money was largely soaked up by higher house prices and taxes. It’s a classic example of how something that begins as liberation can quietly turn into a new form of constraint. Longitudinal studies on happiness and time use (including data from the American Time Use Survey and OECD reports) show that the sharp rise in dual-earner households correlated with stagnant or declining leisure time for families, while subjective well-being metrics for parents have not risen in line with the additional income — supporting the idea that much of the gain was captured by housing costs and taxation rather than improved quality of life. It’s a reminder to look carefully at changes that society presents as inevitable progress. What do you think — has the double-income model delivered more freedom or more pressure for most families?

Someone wrote an astute article I'm remembering vaguely about how Star Wars announced this epochal turn of ruling class dreams. Darth Vader is introduced committing a huge extermination. And the audience is then led on a multifilm journey to their discovery that he is the hero.
