It is a black bear. You do not have to be afraid of a black bear. They are skittish little foragers that climb trees to get away from real predators. They are potentially dangerous to small dogs, unsupervised children and the elderly or infirm, but a healthy adult with a hiking stick to whack it with can fend off a black bear without much difficulty.
